Painful Thickened Toenails

 

Thickened toenails can result from an instant or repeated trauma, from some medical conditions, medications, aging, fungal infection or ill fitting footwear.

Thickened toenails can often be mistaken as also being a fungal toenail.

Usually, thick toenails are not problematic, however, sometimes they can become painful and difficult to manage if left untreated.

Common signs and Symptoms

  • Brittle, splitting or cracking nail

  • Increased thickness

  • Darker appearance

  • Difficulty cutting nail

Treatment

Treatment options are determined by the cause of the thickened nail. They can be either non-surgical or surgical.

Non-Surgical

Thickness reduction involves cutting the nail back and grinding down the thickness of the nail to make it more manageable/comfortable.
